16-letni Justin Tolchuck (Dan Byrd) jest inteligentnym i obdarzonym dużym poczuciem humoru, wrażliwym licealistą. Mimo usilnych starań jego matki Franny (Amy Pietz), ojca biznesmena, Gary'ego (Scott Patterson) oraz ślicznej i lubianej przez wszystkich siostry, Claire (Lindsey Shaw), Justin nie potrafi się odnaleźć wśród swoich rówieśników z liceum w Medorze. Franny postanawia więc zapisać chłopca do międzynarodowego programu wymiany licealistów z przekonaniem, że nowy przyjaciel poprawi w towarzyskie notowania syna. Rodzina Tolchucków z niecierpliwością wyczekuje przyjazdu gościa. Okazuje się nim Raja Musharaff (Adhir Kalyan), 16-letni muzułmanin z małej wioski w Pakistanie.
