Philip J Fry, niezbyt inteligentny chłopak, który przenosi się przypadkiem 1000 lat w przyszłość, musi przystosować się do nowej rzeczywistości. Nie jest to jednak takie łatwe zważywszy na to, że osoby z którymi współpracuje, nieco odbiegają od normalności. Jego nowy przyjaciel - Bender - jest robotem, który posiada same negatywne cechy charakteru i jest uzależniony od wszelakich używek. Jego daleki krewny - profesor Farnsworth - jest genialnym wynalazcą, ale z powodu podeszłego wieku, jego zachowania nie da się przewidzieć. John Zoidberg jest krabem, który przybył na Ziemię w poszukiwaniu sławy. Tu został zatrudniony jako lekarz, jednak jego wiedza lekarska jest wątpliwa, a zachowanie bardzo dalekie od powszechnie przyjętego. Jest jeszcze Leela - piękna kobieta, tyle że... ma jedno oko pośrodku głowy. Fry'owi to nie przeszkadza i zakochuje się w niej, ale niestety bez wzajemności. Postaci jest dużo, dużo więcej - są ludzie, roboty, kosmici i mutanci, a każda z tych postaci jest inna, charakterystyczna i niezwykle barwna.
